San Sebastian 2023 mission: Are we witnesses?

Under the motto “Lord, we want to be witnesses…”, the São Sebastião 2023 mission was carried out in Argentina. Every year, this celebration attracts pilgrims, tourists and missionaries: children, young people, adults, priests, seminarians and religious from different parts of the country and abroad.

Since 2018, Sr. Norma de la Cruz Medel, daughter of the Las Oveja people, represents the presence of the Sisters of the Poor together with the other sisters participating, accompanying and living the mission experience.

Missionary activities begin on January 11 with the recitation of the novena, celebration, Eucharistic adoration and sacraments of initiation. The mission includes activities visits to families, care and service, pilgrimage on foot, cycling on horseback, recreational meetings for children, women and the elderly.

On January 19th, after mass, a vigil followed starting a procession with torches. In a moment of silence, prayer and reflection, pilgrims walk through the village with the image of Saint Sebastian until midnight to thank the Saint.

On January 20 is the awaited day that brings together pilgrims from different places participating in the Holy Liturgy and the closing of the event with a Warmth festivity and distribution of prizes. Saint Sebastian is the protector of breeders of northern neuquino in Argentina.

And after a good production of sheep and goat cattle, the devotion of San Sebastián martyr is lived with great participation and with same intensity in Chile. And because of growing devotion at the request of the community of Las Ovejas, Don Alfonso Solís went to Yumbel (Chile) in search of the image that today is found in the Sanctuary as the patron saint of the people, giving rise to the feast in 1946.
